Meet Amaryllis Owens, our President and a former voice actress who’s favorite Philly cheesesteak spot is outside of Philly.
What’s your favorite part about living in or near Philly?
My favorite part is discovering new things in Philly.
Who’s your favorite Philly icon, alive or dead?
That’s a tough one. I will say Jill Scott.
Your out-of-town friends are here for the weekend. Where in Philly do you take them for a good time?
Friday Remix at the Philadelphia Art Museum. You get live music, fun art activities, delicious cocktails, and good food. It’s a fantastic cultural experience.
What’s a little-known fact about yourself?
I am a voice actress. I’ve recorded two short stories and a podcast.
It’s Saturday night—where can we catch you hanging out?
As of late, my sofa! Pre-pandemic, Saint Lazarus Bar was a favorite for dancing.
Which Philly cheesesteak spot is actually the best?
Leo’s Steak Shop. It’s in Sharon Hill, outside of the city, but it’s delicious.
Favorite film or TV show that features Philly?
TV show: This is Us. Film: Law Abiding Citizen.
What three words would you use to describe Philadelphia to someone not from here?
Culture, Food, Heart.
How long have you been involved with the Spruce Foundation? And why did you decide to get involved?
I’ve been involved with Spruce for three years. I joined because Spruce makes it easy to join a board and do great, impactful work. It’s a space for people to learn about the philanthropic needs of Philadelphia and it creates space for new philanthropists to make a difference.
What has been your favorite event, initiative, or accomplishment while you’ve been at Spruce?
My favorite initiative has been creating partnership with Philly organizations to include Philadelphia youth in our annual grant review process. This is an exciting way for us to empower youth by including them in the decision-making process.
The Spruce Foundation is managed by an all-volunteer group of rising stars in Philadelphia’s professional community who are dedicated to leveraging their skills to build a promising future for local youth. Learn more about the Spruce Foundation and who we are »
