Meet Maggie Place, chair of our Strategic Operations committee and next year’s President, a singer and performer who loves all that Philadelphia’s outdoors has to offer.
Your out-of-town friends are here for the weekend. Where in Philly do you take them for a good time?
I love introducing my friends to all of the outdoor activities Philly has to offer. We ride Indego bikes, get tacos at Spruce Street Harbor Park, lounge by the public Kelly Pool in Fairmount Park, and stroll along the Schuylkill Banks!
What’s your go-to coffee shop in Philly? And why?
One of my favorite activities is sitting in front of the mosaic facade of Black ‘n Brew on East Passyunk sipping La Colombe coffee and chowing down on a hot, spicy breakfast burrito. It’s a great spot for people watching (and dog watching!)
It’s Saturday night—where can we catch you hanging out?
A few Saturdays a year, you can find me performing at the Kimmel Center with the Philly POPS orchestra as part of the Festival Chorus. Come check out a show!
How long have you been involved with the Spruce Foundation? And why did you decide to get involved?
I began working with Spruce Foundation in 2016 as a grant reviewer, and I joined the board in 2019 because I wanted to be more involved with the logistics of the organization.
What is your committee (or ad-hoc committee) working on right now that you’re most excited about?
Recruiting new board members is one of my favorite tasks, and we have been continually reviewing our practices to attract new members who work in different industries and live in neighborhoods all across the Philadelphia region.
What has been your favorite event, initiative, or accomplishment while you’ve been at Spruce?
Last year, we hosted a recruitment event at the Cherry Street Pier, and it felt incredible to be back in person with my fellow board members while sharing our enthusiasm for the work we do with potential new members!
The Spruce Foundation is managed by an all-volunteer group of rising stars in Philadelphia’s professional community who are dedicated to leveraging their skills to build a promising future for local youth. Learn more about the Spruce Foundation and who we are »
