Spruce Foundation, a Philadelphia-based philanthropic organization, is excited to announce that they have increased their total grant offerings this year in celebration of their tenth year of supporting youth in the city of Philadelphia.
Typically, Spruce Foundation awards four grants of $5,000 each in the areas of Arts, Education, LGBTQ, and Health & Wellness. This year, the board voted to offer a brand-new fifth grant category: Peacebuilding. This new grant will increase the total amount awarded by the organization to $25,000.
Through what began as a giving circle among friends, Spruce Foundation has changed the face of philanthropic giving by leveraging the skills of Philadelphia’s next-gen leaders hoping to build a promising future for local youth. Grantmaking Chair, Jeannette Rowland, emphasizes that young professionals “have a responsibility to become more civically engaged in our city and help build up Philadelphia’s philanthropic community.” Rowland adds that she feels a strong sense of belonging in “being surrounded by other like-minded young professionals who are serious about serving Philly and making it a better place.”
Spruce’s board members are responding to this call to action by taking on philanthropic responsibility. The young professionals who make up the board raise the funds to issue grants each year through individual donations and event revenue; they also do the work to assess grant applications to identify the most progressive and sustainable nonprofit programs in the city.
